Authoritarianism and Democracy: How to Strengthen One and Prevent the Other

In a full democracy, every person has some amount of voice and power. Under an authoritarian regime, the voice and power of everyday people is threatened or even extinguished. As our nation teeters on the edge between democracy and authoritarianism, how can we use the power and leverage available to us to turn the tide? What can one person, one family, one community do?

Research on political activism and community organizing identifies proven approaches to building successful movements for social change even in the most challenging of times through individual research, mass mobilization, social connection, and the cultivation of community capability. In breakout sessions, participants will draw from what we've learned to assess their organizing strengths, identify challenges and develop a resolution for organizing in the year to come. Together, we will find the ways in which resistance is not futile.
